When Apple unveiled the iPod Touch, our reception of it was lukewarm. Its video wasn’t as bright and defined as that of the iPhone. It offered an unnecessarily hobbled set of features — the Calendar application, for example, didn’t allow you to add or edit events, and the device lacked applications such as Stocks, Weather and Notes. And its playtime didn’t measure up to Apple’s estimates. Slick though the touch-screen interface was, many users were disappointed that the Touch didn’t live up to the dream of the “phone-less iPhone.”

As Apple iPhone fans who don’t want to sign up for a new phone, we were hoping the Apple iPod touch would be the perfect compromise. Based on its specs (Wi-Fi, mobile Safari, the multitouch interface, and twice the Apple iPhone’s storage capacity at 16GB), it sure looks like it would be. But after testing the 16GB iPod touch we’ve encountered a number of hardware and software issues and it looks like Apple still has some work to do.

Apple has found a way to squeeze more life out of a battery charge. With the 1.1.1 iPod touch software my iPod touch played music continuously for just under 17 hours—five hours short of Apple’s claim of 22 hours of continuous audio play. My new 32GB iPod touch, running software version 1.1.3, played for 26 hours and 36 minutes—four and a half hours longer than Apple’s estimate. As with the test files on my 16GB iPod touch, these were AAC files encoded at 128kbps of lengths between two and six minutes. WiFi was switched on and EQ and Sound Check turned off. Screen brightness and volume were set in the middle, and the touch was configured to Auto-Lock after one minute.

Apple iPod Touch (32GB) Review by amazon

The Touch is (currently) the best flash-based media player around, with a stunning (even revolutionary) new gesture-based user interface that works. I would have welcomed a significantly larger main storage, but it’s very good as it is now. As a media player it’s main drawback derives from the purely touch-based interface: it could have profited from a tactive rotary controller for ‘blind’ control.

Apple iPod Touch (32GB) Review by cnet

The good: The Apple iPod Touch has a large, video-worthy screen, a cutting-edge interface, and Wi-Fi Internet, e-mail, and music download capabilities.

The bad: The iPod Touch may cost too much for you, depending on your needs. It has a small capacity for a portable video player.

The bottom line: The iPod Touch is a beautiful product, inside and out, but prepare yourself for sticker shock.
