Iriver first introduced its innovative D-Click interface in 2005 with the release of the U10, the boxy predecessor to the Clix line. The company shows no signs of abandoning the system, which is used to full effect on its latest U.S. release, the LPlayer. This ultracompact MP3 player could be the offspring of a first-gen Clix and the S10, with its similar design and extensive feature list. But the LPlayer isn’t exactly like its predecessors. The company’s latest device, the Portable Media Center PMC7230 (30GB, $349) is quite a departure from the aforementioned players, in more ways than one. The Philips PMC takes two user-friendly features–direct video recording and the Media Center interface–and wraps them into an attractive, TV-like package. Unfortunately, the device doesn’t fully live up to its potential.

The foundation of Archos was set-up in 1988. Originally it was a company dealing with digital media storage. It grew with market trends into new technologies; and became a well-known brand within this market. It was a natural progression that Archos got into portable media players (PMP) and specialised in storage data for entertainment in audio and video.Archos now is a reasonably priced brand in portable technologies. Certainly not a well- marketing brand like Apple but still highly regarded. The Slacker is a new portable music player that was originally slated to be released in the summer of 2007 but has been delayed until the end of January. The Slacker is a portable internet radio player that the company claims will rival the iPod. While many players have made this claim (see Microsoft Zune), the Slacker takes a new approach by trying to change the game. Instead of downloading, a song is streamed directly to this player from a choice of around 100 customizable Internet radio stations. The listener decides, on a song-by-song basis, whether or not they “Love It” or to “Ban It”. These choices help determine what future songs will be streamed to you.

The last MobiBlu MP3 players to grace the CNET Reviews desk–the US2 and the Cube2–scored very well with the editors, thanks to innovative designs and useful features. More than a year later, we got our hands on MobiBlu’s latest device for the States, the B2. Currently available with 2GB of flash memory for $99, the B2 suffers from an unimpressive design and some crippled features. However, the player still offers some worthwhile extras and reasonable sound quality.

When Samsung came out with the K5 in 2006, we were stoked to see an MP3 player with an unusual design trait: a nifty built-in speaker that flipped out from behind the device and propped the player up for optimal listening. It helped, too, that the K5 offered plentiful features and stellar audio quality, though we weren’t so keen on the super thick girth required to accommodate the speaker. Enter the S5, the K5’s slimmer successor that adds built-in Bluetooth to the mix. While the S5 suffers from a few minor drawbacks such as a small screen and proprietary video support, it’s quite the worthy option for those with a penchant for top-notch audio quality and the ability to share tunes on the fly.
