The company shows no signs of abandoning the system, which is used to full effect on its latest U.S. release, the LPlayer. This ultracompact MP3 player could be the offspring of a first-gen Clix and the S10, with its similar design and extensive feature list. But the LPlayer isn’t exactly like its predecessors. It comes with a more reasonable starting price point: $110 for the 4GB and $160 for the 8GB. (more…)

The company’s latest device, the Portable Media Center PMC7230 (30GB, $349) is quite a departure from the aforementioned players, in more ways than one. The Philips PMC takes two user-friendly features–direct video recording and the Media Center interface–and wraps them into an attractive, TV-like package. Unfortunately, the device doesn’t fully live up to its potential.

The foundation of Archos was set-up in 1988. Originally it was a company dealing with digital media storage. It grew with market trends into new technologies; and became a well-known brand within this market. It was a natural progression that Archos got into portable media players (PMP) and specialised in storage data for entertainment in audio and video.Archos now is a reasonably priced brand in portable technologies. Certainly not a well- marketing brand like Apple but still highly regarded. If, you are not aware of Archos; I can state that everyone in the Western world has been using their products and technologies on a frequent daily basis without knowing it (more…)

The massive 7-inch touch-screen on Archos’ 705 WiFi makes it far less portable than the other media players we’ve seen, unless cargo pants or overalls are still an integral part of your wardrobe. But if you’re down to lug this monster around, you’ll reap both its big-screen benefits and deftly implemented wireless functionality. Download new movies from CinemaNow from a Wi-Fi hotspot, or connect to any network to stream or download files directly to the player. In the world of portable video players, there are swift little cheetahs like the Apple iPod Touch, midsize workhorses like the Cowon A3, and then there are breathtaking mastodons like the Archos 705 WiFi. If you take your gadgets extra-large, the Archos 705 WiFi offers a boatload of entertainment in a sturdy design priced at $399 (80GB) and $499 (160GB).
The Slacker is a portable internet radio player that the company claims will rival the iPod. While many players have made this claim (see Microsoft Zune), the Slacker takes a new approach by trying to change the game. Instead of downloading, a song is streamed directly to this player from a choice of around 100 customizable Internet radio stations. The listener decides, on a song-by-song basis, whether or not they “Love It” or to “Ban It”. These choices help determine what future songs will be streamed to you.
More than a year later, we got our hands on MobiBlu’s latest device for the States, the B2. However, the player still offers some worthwhile extras and reasonable sound quality.
